North Gwinnett vs. Pope vs. Chattahoochee vs. Flowery Branch vs. Mill Creek vs. Brookwood
Congratulations to North Gwinnett Fencers on an outstanding tournament this past weekend. You all fenced so well and parents and students both were helpful in making the tournament run so smoothly. On the men’s side, all our fencers advanced to the DE’s. In his first GHSFL tournament, Dennis Taylor advanced to the DE’s but had to face the number 1 seed right off the bat. Tyler Adams showed them all who was really number one, though, and finished in 1st place for the 2nd consecutive tournament. Congratulations also to Kyle Spoerke who took home a 3rd place medal. Jason Choi (7th), Pratik Deshpande (12th), Drew Ritzman (13th) and Zac Cooper (16th) also scored points for the team, and Steely Hawkins just missed at 21st. For the women, Devon Drew also repeated as champion, while Angela Hood placed 3rd in her first GHSFL tournament! Allison Eddy was 6th and Kayla Howey 7th . Nicole Gustafson also had a great tournament, finishing 8th. (Unfortunately, Nicole faced more challenges than she should have in one tournament, having to fence one pool bout twice due to director error and experiencing a failed body cord midway through a DE match.) Lora Persyn and Jennifer Turner also did great in their first tournament, finishing 14th and 17th.

Final 2007-2008 Tournament Results

The Championship Tournament was held Saturday April 29th, 2008 at Roswell High School

North Gwinnett's fencing team finished 2nd out of 9 teams for the season. This is a huge accomplishment for North's team considering we have one of the smaller teams with only 14 fencers. We came in just behind one of the larger teams that has over 30 fencers. For the past two years, North's team has placed 5th out of 7 teams. This was a big move up in overall team placement due to the whole team working hard all season long.

North's Men's team is the State Championship Men's Team for the second year in a row. They placed first with only 10 men fencers by 54 points ahead of teams much larger. Houston placed 3rd and Sean placed 6th out of 87 men. This was Sean's highest finish and first medal for the season. Steely placed 3rd for a Novice man in the tournament winning his second Novice medal for the season.

In the women's event, Allison placed 2nd and Devon placed 5th out of 68 women in the championship. This has been an awesome first season of fencing for freshman Allison Eddy. This was the 3rd time this season that Allison has placed in the top 8 in a tournament. She won a Novice medal every time possible. This was the second time this season that Allison won both a top 8 medal and 1st place Novice medal.
This was the 4th time this season that Devon won a top 8 medal. Kayla won 7th place Women's Novice in the championship tournament. This was the second time this season Kayla has won a Novice medal. All 3 of North's women fencers present at the championship won a medal. Fantastic job ladies!!!

For the year, Houston finished in 2nd place for the man with the most overall points for the season. Kyle and Kevin tied for 11th overall, Sean Manley was 14th, Zach Cooper was tied for 21st, and Drew Ritzman was 25th out of 98 men fencers in the league for the year.

In the women’s division, Devon finished in 6th place overall out of 88 women this year. Allison finished 1st for all Novice women fencers and 8th overall.

For the year out of 6 tournaments and 5 Novice results:

The women have won 7 top 8 medals which were one 2nd place, three 3rd place, one 5th place, one 6th place, and one 8th place medals. The Novice women have won a total of 9 Novice women medals which were four 1st place, one 3rd place, one 4th place, one 6th place, and one 7th place medals.

The men have won 13 top 8 medals which were one 1st place, four 2nd place, two 3rd place, one 5th place, three 6th place, and two 7th place medals. The Novice men have won a total of 4 Novice men medals which were one 1st place Novice, two 2nd place Novice, and one 3rd place Novice medals.

As a team, they won a total of 33 medals out of 6 tournaments for the season which included 20 top 8 medals and 13 Novice medals.

Our team has a great deal to be proud of for the season. Not only were all 14 fencers tough competitors and good sportsmen, but they had the results to prove it.
